ReplyDeleteIn North America, all male woodpeckers have red somewhere on their heads. The converse is not true; some females also have red (though often it is less than the male).
ReplyDeleteSo we cannot conclusively say this is a male because of the red, but if an adult has no red on its head, we can conclusively say it is a female.
