My instinct was to keep getting closer to isolate the shot to a single animal, but then that one in the middle started looking at me real closely and I figured I'd just shoot where I was standing, after all.

Wise move! If you want a single buffalo shot, perhaps the ones in the Golden Gate Park Buffalo Paddock are still there.
